Dear friends,
I am relatively new to field of structural engg. I have a few queries and request help from my learned colleagues of this field:
1) I have a situation where I have to substitute the existing longitudinal bars of columns of dia 28 tor which are not available in the market with bars of some other dia. like 32,25,20 etc. Now splicing is to be done in the ground floor (plinth beams were cast). The 28 tor bars are provided upto-splicing zone of the ground floor columns. (16 no-28 Tor). Can I substitute 16no.-28 Tor with 8no-32 tor plus 8no-25 tor which gives little more area than required. If this arrangement is permitted, what splice length I have to provide for 28/32 lapping? Should it be as required for 28 dia or for 32 dia.
2) We are planning a riser-less staircase with a central stringer beam. Consequently only a tread slab (step) with over-hang on both sides of stringer beam is required to be provided .The reinforcement detailing of the junction of stringer beam and tread slab is given in sp-34 (pg. 145). In the sloping stretch of the stringer beam not more than one tensile bar of the tread slab can be tied to the beam top bars and the remaining tensile bars of tread slab will be little elevated corresponding to the beam top bars at any given junction. Kindly suggest what arrangement is to be done at the interface of this stringer beam – tread slab junction.

Hello I think you should provide lap length (=development length) according to the big dia. bar because the total new area ( which is now a combination of different dia. bars) will also be fully stressed as the old one will be; for a load combination for which it was originally designed. i.e. for combination of 28 & 32 it will be for 32 & for combination of 28 & 25 it will be for 28.
