Dear Sefians,
If the length of structure exceeds the permissible codal limit then expansion gap is provided. Please tell me whether temperature stresses can be catered by means of shrinkage strips.
In that case, please tell whether shrinkage strips are an alternative to expansion gaps & which is technically correct & viable
Senior Technocrats- Please advice.
Regards,
Supriya

Hi,
shrinkage strips are employed as temporary joints to reduce shrinkage cracks in a multistory building.

P.S. See attached paper for more details

Dear Supriya,
As rightly mentioned by Dr. NS, shrinkage strip is different from Expansion joints. You may also look at my reply to Mr. Leakath under discussion title "Thermal Analysis for RC Buildings" posted on 28th Jan. 2009, where some more references are available

Dear Supriya,
In my opinion, you cannnot consider the shrinkage strips as a substitute for expansion joint.
Shrinkage strips are only temporary and it do not caters to the long term effect(seasonal) of the temperature stresses.
To releive these either you have to provide expansion gaps or do the temperature analysis,
regards,
Aravan.
