I am currently designing a building at Bhuj in Kutch, Gujarat which falls in Zone V of the Indian seismic map. The bldg mainly consists of RCC shear walls. The ductile detailing of shear walls is being done as per IS : 13920 - 1993 with the provision of boundary elements as per the requirement. The clause 9.4.3 of the code specifies that if the gravity load adds to the strength of the wall, its load factor shall be taken as 0.8.
Could anybody throw light on this clause, with respect to the design of the wall having the following data: Wall plan dimensions = 1175mm x 200mm Wall height = 3325mm (clear height) Ultimate Axial load Pu = 734 kN Ultimate Shear Vu = 275 kN Ultimate Moment Mu = 559 kN.m
