I think, the reason stated by Bina (Sorry! I don't know your full name)
is correct. I will try to explain it further. Expansion joints are
provided in the buildings in order to relieve / reduce the thermal
forces. Thermal force arises in structures due to co-existence of
1) Temperature change
2) Restraint to expansion / contraction
Buildings are restrained at the supports against horizontal translation
/ relative movement. So, thermal force in horizontal direction arises.
But typically a building structure is supported at base and free at top.
Hence, there is no restraint against vertical expansion / contraction.
It implies, thermal force can not arise in vertical direction. It is
like a cantilever beam subjected to uniform temperature rise, where no
thermal force can exist. Due to this reason expansion joints are not
necessary in columns.

At the end, the effect of restraint should not be confused with the
load effect.

I was discussing this with one of my colleague & I am quite convinced
by his
reply . Columns or vertical RCC members are subjected to heavy Axial
loads
(always) , which acts downwards , so there is no question of Columns
expanding in Vertical direction. Whereas in Beams of Slabs it's not
the
case. In case of horizontal members the RCC components can expand or
contract with rise & fall in temperature.
But still there are some minor dimensional changes due to potential
impact
of temperature , which can be overcome by appropriate design methods ,
as we
do while designing Concrete Arch (supporting huge concentrated loads).
In
fact in Arch design this temperature effect caters for Major Moments.
Correct me if I am wrong.
