Dear all

I have an interesting detailing problem.

In ductile detailing of the lateral ties for columns as per IS13920, the spacing of ties shall be at 150mm c/c in the lap zone, minimum dimension/4 in the confinement zone and  minimum dimension/2 in other locations.

In case of using couplers (mechanical splicing) in place of laps what can be the detail in the coupler location for ties ?

Since the coupler will be tested for the strength for more than that of mother bar

1) can we treat it as a single bar and give minimum dimension/ 2 spacing for ties ( As the force transfer for coupler is not through the bond strength of concrete) or

2) since at any point of time the joint is always weaker in the long run, shall we still keep the spacing as 150c/c or how much we can provide ?

As the coupler locations will be staggered in practice, we have to provide the ties till some zone beyond the coupler. What can be distance for the this zone beyond coupler ?

Can you share any references/ experiences please.

Thanks/ Regards,

K. Surya Prakash
