Dear Ravi Joshi,

Accelerometers and Velocitymeters have been found
to be most reliable and versatile instruments in Vibration
measurements.

These instruments manufactured by Kinemetrics Inc. USA
have been used by me in the experimental study and  found to
be dependable.

3rd August 2004

The Director,
National Aerospace Laboratories
(Council of Scientific and Industrial Research)
P.B. No. 1779, Kodihalli,
Bangalore - 560 017

Subject       :     Proposed Construction of Aircraft Hangar and
Associated
Facilities : Approx. Cost Rs. 700.00 lakh

Dear Sir,

Please refer to the advertisement of "National Aerospace
Laboratories" in
Bangalore issue of "Times of India" dated July 29, 04 asking for
applications for shortlisting Architects for the above quoted project.

We would like to bring to your notice that the design of an Aircraft
Hangar
requires more of Structural Engineering than of Architectural input.  As
such the project can best be serviced by a Structural Engineer as the
prime
consultant supported by an Architect, rather than by an Architect
supported
by a Structural Engineer.  Economy in the construction of the hangar can
be
achieved only by the Structural Engineer by adopting an imaginative and
ingenuous structural solution.

This can be verified from the existing hangars in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata,
Bangalore, Nasik and other cities of India, as well as abroad, which have
all been designed by Structural Engineers or Multi Disciplinary
Engineering
Firms.

May we therefore request you to please shortlist only Structural
Engineering
and Multi Disciplinary Engineering Firms for this project rather than
Architects.

Thanking you,

Very Truly Yours,

Mahendra Raj
President, IAStructE Head Office, New Delhi

The least expensive method would be to use strain gages and computer
monitoring. Consult one of the strain gage manufacturers for specific
instrumentation requirements. If money is no object (which is rarely the
case) accelerometers are preferred.
