Dear friends,

Is there any regulation or law for the duration for which the practicing structural engineer need to preserve the record (i.e. structural drawings and load calculations) and is accountable to surrender the same within that time duaration, if required ?

My dear friend, where is any law regulating our profession? It is
extremely difficult to locate records in case future extension happens,
so it is wise to maintain records for your own benefit,in such a case.
However, I am not aware of any provisions being applicable to us.
Normally Samajhdaar clients preserve it too, but I guess, we should keep
it too, at least for all the important projects,

Good question...I am not aware of such norms. But, as such,
we in India are rather careless in record keeping.

It will be good to hear from others on SEFI. And, may be we can
collectively come up with some norms!

In one of the Organizations (for which I worked), it was mandatory to
preserve the contract documents, construction drawings and design
documents for a minimum period of 15 years. However, they used to
preserve those stuff for much longer period, in micro-film when there
was no CD. Many a times they reaped its benefit, as the client
approached them for big future renovation / retrofit job on a nominated
basis without any competitive bidding.

Regards.

In the USA it was a standard practice to keep the dox handy
for about 4 to 5 years after the project is completed.
Thereafter all the data would be transferred to micro-film.
I guess now with the IT revolution CD's are a better option, maybe.
But what if the CD gets corrupted !

I believe the Architects here normally keep the dwgs
available for 7 to 8 years.
