Dear Colleagues:

kindly see the message from Prof. R N Iyengar of IISc. Many of you may
not realise the significance of this message and hence this email.

In recent years, there has been concern that the seismic zone maps tend
to classify rather large areas in the same seismic zone. For instance,
Delhi in zone IV and Calcutta in zone III. This disregards the fact that
different areas of Delhi may experience different level of shaking due
to local geotechnical and geological conditions in different parts of
Delhi. Hence, to address this issue, the concept of seismic
microzonation has evolved in recent years. In India too, several efforts
are being made towards this for several cities.

Professor Iyengar has been interested in this subject for a number of
years. His article mentioned below (and it can be downloaded free of
charge) outlines his work for microzonation of Delhi. I encourage the
colleagues interested in this subject to read this article.

You may recall that a few weeks back, there were emails from Prof. AR
Chandrasekaran, Prof. Iyengar and Ms. Alpa Sheth expressing concerns
about the technical details of another microzonation exercise being
carried out for Jabalpur by a number of agencies. This article will help
clarify some of the issues.

With best regards,

Sudhir K Jain
IITK
