Dear Sefi members,

I would like to address a major problem that has not been
mentioned much in this forum. We must attach importance to the time
needed to do a complete and do a thorough design. Most of the time the
structural designers are under tremendous pressure to give instructions
to the drafting team & autocad technicians to finish off drawings. Most
of the initial conceptual  drawing stage that should be spent in
devising a proper structural arrangement ,visualizing the load path &
load transfer  mechanism is lost in trying to meet the client's
construction drawing deadline dates. The softwares comes handy & is
useful but in a hurry often unrealistic modelling is done without giving
any thought to the software's limitations /assumptions and often
analysis results of the modelled structure are not cross checked by
manual appromimate methods ,nor much time is devoted to see  how the
structure is behaving with a particular structural arrangement.

Any structure or project should be first studied & the time needed to
tackle the problem should be given importance &  we should  not simply
rush to meet the client's deadline. At the onset we must make it clear to
our clients that the problem at hand may require in depth analysis &
clearly tell him that the dates & time  proposed by him is not doing
justification to the project or the structure.

This may reduce the human error element also if we were given time  to
think clearly & go in a systematic  manner with our calculations &
analysis. We must remember that structural engineering is not just a
bunch of equations but requires constant thinking  & visualization.

Thanking you

With regards to all sefians

I appreciate the comments & concept of the author
Design is very importat for structures to be carried out in detaisl but not after the architectural concept but effective from the inception stage to avoid the time delay which is only possible when disciplinary professionals work together & not obtain a devised drawing input
For this attainment much has to be done in India
Indian people are not used to Engineering professionalism anyhow it is not too late. Improvement is always possible in the world & probably India is rushing towards that direction noe & I am optimistic about this
But one more issue raisable is to have propoer control on the construction operations which are oftenly overlooked by foothpath builders who are generally thump impression users
India should remove all these quakes first & public should be made aware & also engineers should not think of money but try to standarise to global standards in execution
