Dear All,

I would like to discuss on IS recommendation if any the c/c distance of spacer bar use in RCC detailing of beam and I found in different RCC detailing based on different diameter of bars the c/c distance have been mentioned 200mm/500mm/750mm/900mm/1000mm/1500mm so and so. I have confused on such important issue and I would like to know the technical reasons for optimum spacing of spacer bar.

Dear Sir,
The spacer bars have placed at certain distances in longitudinal direction of beam in between two layers of reinforcements. I would like know is any recommendation regarding the spacing of spacer bars in IS code (IS 456 & SP34 or any other code BS /ACI).

Purpose of spacer bar is to keep space for concrete between two layers. If dia. of main bars is small  then c/c distance  shall be less. If dia. of main bar is higher then the distance of spacer bars shall be more.

Best Wishes,

The main purpose of spacer bar is maintain proper space between main bar and extra bar and to keep space for concrete between two layers of bar. It totally depends on bar diamtr, whether its higher of small.

Dear Er Ghosh,

As suggested by Er Harsoda, Er Saikat and Er Amit Sharma, the purpose of spacer bar is maintain proper space between two or three layers of main bars, such that concrete will flow between them. Since we use max. 20mm aggregates in most of the places, it is better to have 25 mm bars as spacer bars, so that concrete will flow easily.(In general it should be not less than the diameter of bar, or 25 mm, or the largest size of aggregate puls 6mm, which ever is greater)

The spacing between spacer bars is kept in such as way that it will not sag and obstruct the flow of concrete.  Normally the spacing is kept as 1m. - see page 48 of  RC designers Handbook by Reynolds and Steedman for more details.

Best wishes,
NS
