Dear Mr. Kalgal

I agree with Mr. Ahuja in stating that unless the Architect gives a signed copy of his drawings, structural engineer should not give a signed copy of his drawings. The reason is that in case of a mishap (which happened during the Bhuj earthquake for one of the buildings in Surat when a well respected and an elderly Structural Engineer was held responsible for a building collapse. In fact the building was modified by removing one of the columns on the 8th storey for combining two flats.) even if you produce the Architectural drawings based on which you have designed the building, the Architect may deny the ownership of his own drawings which may not be compling the building bye-laws. In that case, the structural engineer can be in a soup.

[Dear SEFIans
I also do not see any harm in signing structural drawings irrespective of whether Architect signs his drawings or not. It may be prudent to put in one or more drawings (in the notes column) a sentence saying "the structural details are worked out as per the architect's inputs" and preserve the drawings issued by the architect safely.

Asking about legal rights to sign a drawings, it is advised not only for India but also internationally, one should be registered professionally & have reference number properly publically notifed. In India, one should be Chartered Engineer (India) for drawing these rights form Engineering Charter of India in statutory application.
One is not entitles to sign even if the person is Phd

Dear Ramesh,
It is unfortunate that in India we dont have any laws or regulations
regarding the signing powers of a structural engineer(in fact u must be
aware of the ongoing debate of licensing of engineers etc) and it will all
depend on how things shape up in the near future(whether the engineer's bill
gets passed before WTO/GATS gets implemented or not and exactly what
conditions are laid down in the final BILL.Till then u can happily sign
without any problem (but make sure ur design and drgs are checked by some
one senior in ur office!)
