Dear all,
Are there any measures by which we can prevent soil liquification. If yes what are they?. What kind of foundation should we go for? I am having a structure to be designed in Seismic Zone 4 in which the soil report gives a bearing capacity of 15t/m2. The report also suggests chances of liquification.
Need your guidance.

Dear Sefian,
Soil liquifaction is caused due to less bonding between the soil particles.
It can be rectified by doing soil stabilisation to make the soil more compact.
1. Mechanical or chemical soil stabilisation
2. Stone column foundation shall be provided which will also improve the soil compaction

Dear SAFIAN,
As the N value is less than 15 in case of Isolated footing or in case of fine sand or uniform sand where effective stress is zero, Liqufication take place. If 'N' value is more than 15 within 5 m depth, Isolated footing with tie beam in between shall be provided. Otherwise, it is better to go for deep end bearing pile to anchor the foundation in rocky or firm strata. I donot think there is any other method to improve the foundation. Senior person may advise any other alternate in this regard.

Dear Sefian,
I have checkedup with the IIT Professor at Madras - soil mechanics. As per their advice if the N value is less than 10, then it is succeptible to liquefaction.
Liquifaction also depends on many factors like:
1. If it is made dense soil by compaction, the N value will increase and the chance of liquefaction will come down.
2. If the soil is contained by some other deep foundations sheet piling or pile foundations of other structures, which will not allow the soil to behave as the liquid due to constraint from all directions. Hence the soil liquifaction can be avoided.
3. Last option is to go for deep foundation - with pile foundations - without considering the soil liquefaction depth in the design calculations.
4. I have used pile foundations for the major structures and category-1 structures for the similar type of condition.
