Dear Jignesh,

There are two codes for 'design of composite
construction in structural steel and concrete' viz.
IS-11384-1985 and IS-3935-1967. Both codes have been
reafirmed by BIS in 1998. The fist one is with elastic
theory whereas the second one is with limit state
method.

However in 11384-1985 code it is mentioned that the
IS-3935-1967 is being replaced by IS-11384-1985.

Can anybody please clarify.

Regard,

Manohar Mate

Dear Prof.Chandrasekaran,

Indian standard IS:11384-1985 titled " Code of
practice for composite
Construction in structural steel and in concrete"
talks about composite
construction.

I personally have not used the code but understand
that it stipulates
composite structure design by Limit state method.

To my knowledge Dr.T K Bandyopadhyay of INSDAG is
currently working on
this code to bring at per with international
standards.

Further input on the subject will be welcome,

Thanks,

Jignesh

If we want to popularise steel construction for
residential or office
buildings,
we must have a code for composite construction,
which may be as a
supplement to IS:800.

INSDAG should take a lead in proposing a draft to be
debated in SEFI

Dear Manohar,

Thanks for your input. I checked IS:11384:1985 and found that it is
based on Limit state method. IS:3935 is no longer in effect.

While as IS:11384 provides basic information about composite structure
design it lacks in many aspects,

1. Code does not talk about beam to beam or Beam to column connections
which are very important for composite connections especially fixed type
connections where supports have hogging moment ( Tension at top).

2. Code is silent on design using metal deck as permanent form work for
concrete slabs.

Eurocode 4 (EC 4) titled "composite beams and columns to EC4 " and
BS:5950 part 3 are more elaborate and can be used where IS:11384 is
silent.
