Dear Er SSK,

31 m wall is abnormal. Kindly check the height. Your condition seems like it is a water tank. In that case you need to consider tank empty and tank full conditions.

I feel that when you are considering tank empty condition, you need to take both earth pressure as well as water pressure, for possible water table raise.

Best wishes,
NS

Dear Er SSK,

It is advisable to post the detailed diagram and details of the 31m high "wall" structure that  you refer.

Dear sir,

The wall is of 31m high , its for River Intake Structure in Hydel project, the total height of structure above foundation itself is 51m. Actually only one panel of 31m which is 12 m in length is the highest, rest all wall panels will be of lower height than this.

If strong abutments / supports are available for the wall on either vertical sides, I think, some cylindrical wall (just like an arch dam) may be economical, if viable, considering the large span of 12m subjected to a huge hydrostatic pressure of 10x31 = 310 kN/sqm or saturated soil pressure at bottom, supposing the water side gets emptied and soil on the otherside is saturated or otherwise.(considering horizontal spanning of the wall).

Dear Sefian,

For general design of RCC wall you shall refer any standard RCC design book. But here 31m high shows the criticality of the structure.

It is advisable to try for some special arrangement to acheive optimised design as suggested by Mr. Jayakumar.
You have to go for tapered wall to get economical design.

Dear SSK,

If the height is 31 m, then you have to use anchors at the top of the wall, or have relieving platforms.

Best wishes,

Sir,

Methods of strength design (RCC) of such an unusual wall, in addition to ensuring stability of it may please be elucidated.
