About the  workshop :

This workshop will focus on the role of wind tunnels in the cost-effective and accurate design of structural frames of tall buildings. Number of tall building projects carried out at RWDI has been used for the demonstration.

This workshop will start with an overview of wind engineering issues and address about how to simplify the complicated issues with the help of physical / computer modeling and field measurements. Thereafter, the fundamentals of wind engineering will be presented. This will be followed by a thorough review of wind tunnel testing and wind load predictions on tall buildings. Finally, the workshop will point out that in many realistic cases, the generic load provisions derived from analytical methods in building Codes and Standards are often insufficiently precise for an optimal design of tall buildings.

About the speakers :
Anton E. Davies, Ph.D., P.Eng., QEP Vice President

Anton joined RWDI in 1977 after completing his doctoral thesis for the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toronto. During his years with the firm, Dr. Davies has provided leadership to a wide range of projects. As one of the Principals in charge of RWDI's Environmental Team, Anton has directed many of the firm's major environmental projects. He is an expert in the field of air quality and has published numerous articles concerning air pollution study and abatement techniques. He is the past chair of the Canadian Environment Industry Association (CEIA) - Ontario Chapter, a National Director of CEIA and is currently chair of their Environmental Exporters Council. He was also past chair of the Air and Waste Management Association - Ontario Section

K. Suresh Kumar, Ph.D., P.Eng., M.ASCE

received M.Sc.(Eng.) and Ph.D. degrees in wind engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 1991, and from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada in 1997 respectively. From 1997 to 1999, he was at the Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands as a post-doctoral associate. Since June 2000, he has been with RWDI Inc., Guelph, Ontario, where he is now an associate and senior specialist in the wind engineering division. Recently he was appointed as the director of RWDI (India) operations. Suresh provides overall technical direction and leadership to the team on projects, helping ensure that a high level of service is provided at all times and that all work conforms to RWDI’s demanding standards for quality.  He has also held an adjunct assistant professor position at the Concordia University, Montreal, Canada since July 2000. He has published/presented a number of wind engineering related articles in major international journals and conferences. He is a licensed professional engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada and he is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Association for Wind Engineering.
