sir,
i want to desigh a underground pit as per british code norms.the load
coming on the wall of the pit (having depth of about 2 m and length being 5
m breadth 2m )are:-
1. Vertical load from top around 32 kN/m
2. Horizontal load coming from the earth pressure.
and water table being below 3 m .
my question is how to design this either as a column or as a retaining wall
and if i design it as a retaining wall how ti take care of vertical load for
designing the wall.....
any reference for book will be highly obliged.

with regards,
Aaditya

Dear Aditya
1.. please  find out if the top slab of the pit is likely to get loaded with either vehicular load or any other Live loads, such as earthfill  etc.
2.. now the wall of the pit is actually similar to a propped cantilever, with a vertical load of 32KN/m and the earth pr, so ur earth pr will be a trapezoidal one after including the effect of  imposed load .So the wall will act uder direct UDL and the earth pr and u can refer any standard text book for its design.
3.. If the depth below NGl is >3m, you will also need to check for uplift and ensure a factor of safety against uplift.
not sure if i have been of help
regards
