Dear sefians,
I am working on "use of viscous dampers as energy dissipation devices " to improve seismic response of a multi storey building with open ground storey.
I need help from you people regarding the design of dampers , as how to decide its properties like Mass, weight, stiffness, rotational inertia etc.
please consider my doubt as my work is strucked at this point.
thanks & regards

Hi Yuvraj,
I think you should refer to the following texts:
http://mceer.buffalo.edu/pdf/report/00-0010.pdf
http://www.ce.berkeley.edu/~mahin/CE227web/EnergyDissipationSystems-Symans-Charney-Whittaker_JSE_Jan08.pdf
Following book is a good reference for design of a structure with seismic protective techniques:
http://www.amazon.com/Principles-Passive-Supplemental-Damping-Isolation/dp/8873580378
I, along with my project group members, had also done a course project where we used different techniques to retrofit a six storey steel moment frame building. Below is the link to the report:

Dear sir,
I am very thankful to you & taylordeviceindia for providing such a useful piece of information. I have heard a lot of taylor devices but knowing about its presence in india is great. Sir, due to limited guidance sources on this topic i request you to provide some detailed design of damper. Any kind of help is welcome & would be of great use.
thanks & regards

hello every one,
can anyone tell me which properties are required for viscous dampers

Is the question clear? If you mean, which properties of the building are affected by use of dampers, the answer is the damping factor. Right now code has a precriptive value of 5% for RCC and 2% for Steel ( please check this). If you use dampers, you might get values like 10%-15% which would greatly reduce the seismic response.

Thanx for the rly Mr. Nimish, but my question is different. I am doing my project on Static and dynamic analysis of 25 story rcc building with and without viscus dampers in etabs software. for that damping coefficient, velocity exponent and stiffness this properties are required in etabs. how we r deciding this properties? if anyone knows than plz kindly rly.
