World's largest solar-powered bridge opened in London

Blackfriars Railway Bridge is a railway bridge crossing the River Thames in London, between Blackfriars Bridge and the Millennium Bridge. It was originally called St Paul's Railway Bridge and opened in 1886. It was designed by John Wolfe-Barry and Henry Marc Brunel and is made of wrought iron. It was built by Lucas & Aird. When St Paul's railway station changed its name to Blackfriars in 1937 the bridge changed its name as well.

As part of the Thameslink Programme, the platforms at Blackfriars station have been extended across the Thames and partially supported by the 1864 bridge piers. The project is designed by WILL ALSOP and built by Balfour Beatty. The work also includes the installation of a roof covered with photovoltiac solar panels(more than 4,400 solar panels are installed above the new Blackfriars station platform),  providing up to half of the energy for London Blackfriars station. Completed in Jan.2014, this Victorian bridge has some 6,000 square metres of photovoltaic (PV) panels, making it London's largest solar array. Solarcentury, the UK company managing the installation, expects the panels to generate around 900,000kWh of electricity a year, providing half of the station's energy and reducing annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 511 tonnes.

Other energy saving measures, such as rain harvesting systems and sun pipes for natural lighting, are also being fitted at Blackfriars, as part of Network Rail's plans to reduce carbon emissions by 25 per cent per passenger kilometre by 2020.

Lindsay Vamplew, Network Rail's project director for Blackfriars, said that the refurbishment will make the station a template for green stations around the world.

"The Victorian rail bridge at Blackfriars is part of our railway history," he said. "Constructed in the age of steam, we're bringing it bang up to date with 21st century solar technology to create an iconic station for the city."
"Electric trains are already the greenest form of public transport - this roof gives our passengers an even more sustainable journey," said David Statham, managing director of First Capital Connect. "The distinctive roof has also turned our station into an iconic landmark visible for miles along the River Thames."

The bridge will also act as a major advertisement for London's efforts to become a sustainable city, with tourists and workers viewing the panels as they enter the capital.

It is the largest of only three solar bridges in the world (the others being Kennedy Bridge in Bonn, Germany, and Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane, Australia). In addition, 16,000 solar panels were laid on the top of a train tunnel in Belgium earlier this year. The array is capable of powering all of the country's trains for one day a year.
