hey engineers
what is the meaning of clear cover of footing is 75mm (B) and 50 mm (S&T) ?

And what is flex board 20mm thinkness provided in b/w ?

And what is the best way to put the shuttring for pcc footing in the the right places as in drawings without the total station

Dear it is your 1st post, but should have been posted in General Discussions
It is engineering related question


what is the
meaning of clear cover of footing is 75mm (B) and 50 mm (S&T) ?
B stands for below footing re-bar mesh clear cover S stands for side, T stands for top of footing


And what is flex board 20mm thinkness provided in b/w ?

Flex boards is a bituminous compressed board used to protect water proofing/ concrete protection from soil membrane, where concrete remains in contact with soil

And what is the best way to put the shuttering for pcc footing in the the right places as in drawings without the total station

Make 'setting outs' of footings on blinding concrete or so called lean concrete & erect form sides

Hi Homi,

Good evening !!

a) I think you have not gone through the design of concrete structure subject in your semester. It is the clear distance between face of reinforcement to face of concrete edge on which part it is to be provided. Such as here you have mentioned 75mm (B) : It will be 75mm clear distance from the bottom of reinforcement upto the bottom face of the concrete in the footing.

b) When 2 footings are placed least adjacent to each other, a clear 25 mm or a paper gap to be maintained in between (Refer "in b/W") them, to avoid combining the footings in to 1 footing. (20mm flex board to be provided in b/w).

for your 3rd query ; It the basic thing we have learned in Survey-2 book, kindly refer to the building layout part. Also as it is a site activity which needs the experience to do this type of job. So it will be better to keep a close watch to the construction foreman's / supervisor's activity during layout of building as a beginner. There would be many way we can put the footing in the right place without using Total Station. So please make your homework before asking any query in future.

For Example :-
Step - 1 - First do the building outline in site.
Step - 2- then mark the both the grid as per Column / footing layout. Step-3- then locate the crossing of the X & Y Grid for different footing in various grids.
Step-4 - then mark the footing size on both side with the white lime by keeping the grid crossing point as centre of the footing

Again most important in this forum is that, you to be very humble and respect full to other members by not using this type of address in future. "HEY ENGINEERS".

This type of language shall not be used by you as beginner in this forum. Do not take this wrongly, because I am also like a friend of yours & it is my humble request only. However, this is a forum of "Structural Engineering Forum of India".

Many elder members in this forum are written our text books also, those probably we have been through in our semesters during the engineering studies. So please keep this in mind that whom you are addressing and how in manner.
