Hi all,

I have performed pile design calculations for a steel column 1470 mm above ground level and extended 800 mm below ground. Have checked compression capacity, tension capacity, lateral capacity and bending moment for a 300mm dia pile and depth 1.5m. The pile is extended by 200 mm above ground level so the total length of pile is 1.7m. Checked bending moment using IS 2911 and Brom's method. Please could you give your inputs and suggestions.

Hi Bhavya,

The figure 4 from IS 2911 you should use this graph for long piles. In your case pile is categorized as the short pile. The deflection formula for short pile you should include as per brooms. The formula given in IS 2911 is purely for a long pile.

What is the lateral deflection limit you consider? As above pile calculations is for solar module supporting structure.

With Regards,
Saikiran.

Thanks Mr. Sai Kiran for your response. The limit considered for lateral deflection is 5mm (as per IS 2911- Part 4- Pile load tests.)

Any other suggestions??

Regards

Hi Bhavya,

You should not consider the bottom of the pile as a depth of fixity for deflection or lateral load resistance calculation. It completely depends on soil modulus (i.e nh , k ). You calculate the lateral resistance and deflection as per the broom method for short piles. For long pile you can follow the IS code.
