Dear Sefians,

Why is deflection for concrete cantilever limited to span/350 (IS  456:2000, Cl 23.2 a) & b))

While in case of steel cantilever deflection is limited to span/150 or soan/180 (IS800:2007, Table 6, Pg 31)

Why is it more stringent in case of concrete beams ? It increases the depth and rebar for cantilevers.

Request friends to throw some light on this.

Relevant Cl are attached along for reference.

Regards,

Yeshwant V. P. C.

Dear Er Yeshwabt

It is because of the creep of concrete. Due to creep the deflection of concrete cantilever beam will become twice that of static defection calculated by you!

Best wishes
Subramanian
