Dear All,

I have to design a 9m high retaining wall to retain a hill side at HP. The restriction is the available base width is approx. 4m. The SBC is 160kN/sqmm at 1.5m depth. Even I provide a L-shaped Counterfort Wall
with shear keys, the upward soil pressure is coming in tension with a value of about -83.74kN/sqmm, and so the wall is failing in stability criteria. How do I solve the problem? Any/All suggestions will be highly appreciated.

I had similar one but we had put 0.9m thick tapering retaining wall with more counterweight

For a 9m tall R/wall, 4m wide base may be insufficient for stability, whether the wall is cantilever or counterfort type, even if shear key is provided. Can you provide under-reamed piles in the heel end ? This will impart stability to the wall against development of tension on soil and overturning. But, there should be ample space to place the tripod for the UR pile. Another method is provision of anchor blocks that mobilize passive earth pressure, connected to the stem top by steel rods embedded in concrete. But, erosion of soil from around the anchor blocks will reduce its efficiency and endanger the wall. Several other modern techniques such as soil nailing, reinforced earth, gabions etc. are there to retain earth. You can refer "Modern Techniques in Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering" by Ninan P Kurian, for details. These should be properly designed for adoption. Gabions can also fail, as shown in the photograph given below, which happened in the Konkan Railway route in the recent rains.

To avoid the tension, you have two options.
1. Increase the Thickness of the foundation to counterweight the negative pull.
2. Increase the Depth of footing so that the weight of soil above your retaining base will increase and along with that the passive pressure will also increase. These two factors will counter the tension.

Other wise you can go for the other soil improving technique mentioned by Mr.Jayakumar based on the cost.

My proposals are :
A. Reinforced earth system with precast cocr. Facial wall OR Gabbion work to environmental friendly.
B. Shelve type RC wall.. another way of counter fort and partition shelves.

Dear Er. Gyaneshwar
Kindly recheck SBC units. It must be kN/m2. (160kN/sqmm is not possible.)

Seen ur problem , u can use two pile of 6-8m  300 dia  to arrest upward forces.
