dear sefians

we are designing a combined footing of slab beam type for two columns which are in horizontal orientation in plan, we are  having a doubt whether the width of beam should be greater than width of column compulsorily or is it ok to provide the width of beam less than width of column ??

regards

What I feel is that it is immaterial if the width of the beam is slightly less than that of the column. What matters is that the beam should be sufficiently deep, not only to take care of the MB / SF, but also to impart sufficient stiffness to it, so that the BM that we idealise it to carry is actually borne by it.
