Dear SEFIans

Please find attached architectural drawings for a three storied building. The building is in Seismic Zone 4. There is an expansion joint near the staircase. Half of the area at Ground floor is Open parking with no infill walls and remaining portion is shops with infill walls.

My question is, whether the whole of Ground floor has to be treated as soft storey or shall i consider only the portion with no infills as soft storey and design the remaining portion of the Ground Floor having infill walls normally.

I am in a doubt as i have not encountered such a case before and expect and early response from my fellow Sefians and Senior Members

Regards
Er. Ankit Suri

Er.ankitsuri,

Checked ur plan and u have provided an expansion joint. It is observed that below the expansion joint the open car parking is less compare to the right side where u have masonry infill. u can consider that portion as a brick infill area.

The portion above the expansion joint  u consider 2 cases. 1. with Infill and another case without infill. Take the average value for the column design.
Anyway as the column in ground floor is for car parking and there is a soft story. U provide special confining reinforcement. that is provide ties of 10 mm dia at closer intervals say 4".

This is my opinion.
Best of luck.
