Dear Members,
Presently IS:456 allows use of steel reinforcement which confirms to IS 1786 but not confirms to IS 13920 in OMRF and ordinary walls in zone 2.
IS 13920 & IS 16700 have some additional / different requirements related to Minimum UTS/YS ratio, Maximum actual to characteristic YS ratio and elongation compared to IS 1786. In proposed IS 456, requirement of IS 13920 is also added which requires reinforcement in all seismic zone (2 to 5) to be of same requirement. However, one requirement of proposed 456 related to Maximum UTS/YS ratio does not exists in IS 13920 but exists in IS 16700-2017.
I believe all this requirements will also be incorporated in future version of IS 1786, otherwise IS 1786 requirement of Minimum UTS/YS ratio, Maximum actual to characteristic YS ratio and elongation will be of no use. Also, many steel reinforcement like Fe500, Fe500S, Fe550, Fe650, Fe700 will have application not covered by IS 456. Also, reinforcement Fe500D, Fe550D and Fe600 will require some modification to comply with proposed IS 456, IS 13920 & IS 16700.
I wish requirement of IS 16700, IS 13920 and proposed IS 456 related to ductility of reinforcement as mentioned above shall be removed and incorporated in IS 1786. Requirements of IS 1786 may be referred in new IS 456,IS 16700 and in IS 13920. All these codes are revised at different time and maintaining uniformity in all codes will be challenging when revision is required.
Also, Generally, steel manufacturers and testing laboratories mention in their test report that their reinforcement confirms to IS 1786 but many times it does not satisfy IS 13920 and/or IS 16700 requirements. So, incorporating IS 13920 & IS 16700 requirement in IS 1786 will need them to satisfy all ductility requirement of the reinforcement.
I believe IS 13920 in future revision will enforce certain additional requirement for use of Fe600 in SMRF and Ductile walls.
Regards,
