Hi, I want to have an opinion on one of building which is resting on bridge deck.
The building is in seismic zone 3 (in India),now while designing the building I need to calculate response from bridge & apply to my building.
It is a office building with G+1 story, columns resting on bridge deck.
My question is how can I calculate the response or do I need to make a combined model. Bridge team is using R=1, now my building system is SMRF & for zone 3, R=5 so how to design such a building. Also my columns are showing > 4% steel at roof level due to column-beam joint design
Experts, please throw some light & suggest best method for design for such a structure. I am using Etab software where as bridge team is using CSI bridge design software. Please advice.

I didn't receive any reply from experts on this topic. I also want to know how can I connect my R.C columns to precast bridge deck. we tried HILTI rebar option but moment in column is very high so it is not passing for some columns. secondly, should I consider partial fixity to columns or a pin support since my building is resting entirely on bridge deck.
Please advice

Hi Bharat,

Having R=1 for bridge is to ensure the structure remains ductile and plastic hinge is not formed at any stage.

The most logical way shall be to introduce transfer truss and then transfer load to columns. The columns for the bridge and building will remain same.

You can have cantilever cap at bridge level and precast deck can rest on it.

you can consider simply supported between slab & column in that case moment will not transfer.
