Dear SEFI members,

Building with ductile coupled wall system (DCWS) as lateral load resisting system (LLRS) is more effective compared to building with ductile / special walls, if designed and detailed with necessary requirements.  Though Coupled wall system is defined in  clause 3.4 of IS:16700-2017, no separate response reduction factor is specified in IS:1893-1 and also no additional or separate detailing requirements are specified in IS:13920.

Requirements for Ductile coupled wall system (DCWS) can be defined in IS:13920 incorporating following parameters related to geometrical, analytical, design and detailing requirements:
(1) Aspect ratio (h/L) of individual wall;
(2) Aspect ratio (L/D) of coupling beams;
(3) Degree of coupling;
(4) Modified design and detailing of shear walls;
     (a) Modified design shear force for plastic hinge region  to account  
           for flexural overstrength and effect of higher modes.
     (b)  Check for drift capacity of walls.
     (c) Modified detailing of plastic hinge region and boundary
          elements.
(5) Modified design and detailing of coupling beams;

Separate response reduction factor can be defined in IS:1893-1 for DCWS. Response reduction factor (R) of 5 is more appropriate for such system. Response reduction factor (R) of DCWS is generally more than that for special wall system and similar to that for SMRF system.
