We have 1m x 1m column casted along with slab and beams upto top of a floor.
Now for the purpose of brickwork and architecture reasons, i want to construct a small column (300x400mm) on top this column to support 2 tie beams. Tie beam are being taken care by side columns.

My concern is the connection of two columns. Due to junction of main beam, slab and column, there is huge amount of reinforcement in top face of column. so drilling is proving to be very tough. Considering the nature of loading (500kN axial, BM 50KNm), I am planning to go for welding of bars with existing column top reinforcement which can be exposed by chipping. Each bar would be bent in direction perpendicular to longitudinal R/F of column and 200mm length would be welded.

Is there any better alternative? Suggestions please?

Dear Er Singh

From post it seems that there is need to  vertical extension of column on already culminated column.
Depending upon the column bars dia of new column , the new column bars L bend (at bottom)  having adequate horizontal length . The horizontal length of 200 mm needs to be increased and welding with beam top bars seems possible after chipping off the top cover . Generally The top bars of column are culminated in top beams and their L bends lie below top bars of beams, hence it may not be possible to weld with existing column bars .

Best wishes
