New York City, March 31, 2011 -- Haiti, Chile, China, Northern California, even Guy, Arkansas (as examined in the New York Times 2/6/11), Christ Church, New Zealand and now, once again, Japan ...  Each of these locations had an earthquake over the last year and a half.  When will a major disaster in California or somewhere else in the United States be next? With the rise in fatalities, severe injuries, increased insurance expenses, and economic devastation associated with recovery from major earthquakes, especially when it comes to housing and shelter, the need for a cost effective, and an easy to apply construction technique to limit the risks of earthquakes to homes has never been greater.

Bernard Jacovitz, a South Florida-based inventor, custom home builder and home inspector with over 50 years experience and dual degrees in architectural and industrial design from Pratt Institute has just received patent approval of his new design for a completely new approach for home construction framing that will minimize and virtually eliminate the risks to the home associated with earthquakes.  Jacovitz, who is 92 years of age, came up with the idea for his newly patented design shortly after the devastating earthquake in Haiti that resulted in an estimated 230,000 deaths, 1,000,000 homeless and near full devastation of the country’s capital infrastructure.  He immediately recognized the need and focused all his efforts on a revolutionary building technique that would prevent damage to standing single and two-story homes during an earthquake.

The technique offers architects and builders a completely new framing method that allows for great flexibility in a home’s frame while avoiding any subsequent reduction in the strength of the frame and its foundation.  In fact, The JacBloxTM Framing System should result in both greater flexibility and increased strength to a home if used according to his design specifications. Best of all the design technique serves as an innovative way to significantly increase a home’s energy efficiency.  The response to the new design has already begun.  Metal Construction News, a key trade paper and blog in the industry, recently interviewed Jacovitz on his invention for its blog.

Highly experienced in home construction techniques both technical and practical, Jacovitz’s newly patented design, owned by Earthquake Resistant Building Construction, Inc., was specifically designed to avoid any increase in the standard cost of home construction.

The newly patented construction technique relies on the use of specialized round steel galvanized corrugated tubing as a replacement for standard wood or concrete block framing.  The tubing is placed adjacent to one another throughout the entire framing process rather than spread out in the framing process.  While steel framing has been around for sometime, there has never been anything similar to the JacBloxTM Framing System.  The new technique will be instrumental in making home construction more sustainable and could help in getting LEED Certification for a home or building.  Homes or buildings that use the JacBloxTM Framing System will require far less lumber and will be able to take advantage of the technique to dramatically increase energy efficiency at no additional cost.  Buildings using the JacBloxTM Framing System will be able to easily blow in eco-safe insulation into the 8” dead air circular columns and into the small spaces between the pipes which will allow for superior energy efficiency over standard construction techniques.

The JacBloxTM Framing System will revolutionize home construction making it safer and more energy efficient offering benefits to both developed and developing nations when building homes.  Builders, architects and engineers could benefit from this new advance.

Framing for Earthquakes
Friday, March 18, 2011

By Stefan Schumacher

Earthquakes, unfortunately, have been top of mind recently. We saw the devastation that hit Japan last week and the subsequent fallout. In only the last year and a half, earthquakes hit Haiti, Chile, New Zealand and even Guy, Arkansas.

What can we do to further protect ourselves?

Ninety-two-year-old Bernard Jacovitz, a South Florida-based inventor, custom home builder and home inspector with over 50 years experience and dual degrees in architectural and industrial design has just received patent approval of his design for a completely new approach for home construction framing that he says will minimize and virtually eliminate the risks to the home associated with major earthquakes.

I interviewed Bernard to find out more about what inspired, steel framing and the difficulty of attaining a patent.

What was the basis for developing this framing system? What are some of the advantages you see in steel framing?

This framing system was developed to make one and two-family homes safe in the event of an earthquake. The devastation in Haiti deeply troubled me and I spent a great deal of time thinking about a new approach to home construction that would severly minimize the risk to homes from earthquakes. At the time of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, all standard construction for homes was either masonry or exterior walls, floors and ceilings. The material in these forms of construction was naturally rigid. My JacBlox Framing System [owned by Earthquake Resistant Building Construction Inc.] for the exterior walls, floors and ceilings is made of 8-inch round galvanized corrugated metal, 8-foot long adjacent to one another. This design technique is resilient and will move when an earthquake occurs, allowing for continued integrity of the building. The JacBlox Framing System will not crack or break apart. The use of the steel framing allows for flexibility with increased overall strength.

What was the process like receiving a patent on this product? How long did it take? Was it difficult?

The process for receiving the patent was extremely arduous and seemed to take forever. There was a great deal of back and forth with my attorney and then with the patent office itself. I have received a patent in the past and the process has not gotten any better, just more expensive and time-consuming, particularly for a small inventor such as myself. The one advantage I had for this patent was my age. I am currently 92 years of age. The patent office does provide, what they consider, an expedited process for older inventors. Overall the cost of the patent attorney, the patent fees, and the answers and search for conflicting patents are most difficult and take enormous time and cost.

What types of applications do you see being most common for this framing system?
The JacBlox Framing System is only good for one and two family homes, one and two stories high. In addition to increased strength and flexibility from my new framing system, homes using this design technique will automatically be far more energy efficient. Ecologically safe foam insulation can be blown into all the pipes and small dead spaces, making the home incredibly energy efficient. Through the use of the JacBlox Framing System, homes will have a far easier time getting LEED certification and will certainly be more sustainable.
