I fully endorse Vijay Kulkarni's comments regarding SCMs( Supplementary Cementitious materials) as well as the sustainability approach.
Many studies were undertaken in U.S. & Canada in the last 30 years pertaining to the "epidemic of Concrete deterioration". Useful lessons were learnt including some v. important ones from the 2000 yr. old pantheon in the use of Volcanic ashes.
Unfortunately most of our practicing engineers, specially structural engineers are not fully aware of the benefits of SCMs in concrete. Dr. P.K. Mehta ( prof. emeritus Berkeley) and Dr. V.M. Malhotra of CANMET fame worked hard in bringing the knowhow of Fly Ash and High Volume fly ash Concrete into the Indian constuction environment 10 years ago. Numerous free conferences and several Demo projects were held between 2002 and 2005 to make the Indian porfessionals comfortable with HVFAC. Much of the technical information including international papers as well as data generated during these demo projects is still available on the hvfacprojectindia website. SEFIans and all other professionals are urged to go thru this mine of information on Durable concrete.
Dr. Abdun-Nur a renowned concrete technologist says " Concrete without SCMs and chemical admixtures is good only for museums" but it is a pity that many structural engineers still resist the use of FLY ash in concrete. It is a pity that many have not tried to learn about CONCRETE as a material while they have been designing skyscrapers in it using sophisticated softwares for years.
Knowledge is available to produce durable concrete today. Tools like the RCPT test are available to convince oneself about the enhanced durability of modern High performance concretes. The knowledge just needs to be acquired / disseminated and used.

Thank you for your comments about use of Supplementary Cementitious materials.
I doubt whether concrete technology is part of the curriculum in many colleges!
As you have rightly pointed out Supplementary Cementitious materials not only increase the durability by filling the minute pores in concrete and making is less permeable, they also reduce the CO2 emissions of Concrete usage and make concrete sustainable.
But as the strength gain, when using these materials, is slow initially engineers should be careful not to load these structures at the early age and cure them for at least 10 days as against the 7 days for concretes without such materials.
