Dear Mr. Bhagat,
In USA the best known Engineering Company for DAM DESIGN is MWH (Montgomery Watson Harza). I have attached the web link of MWH. My background is  only in  design of Commercial (Office) Buildings and Industrial Plants.Question you should be asking is "that STAAD/PRO which is basically used for Building and Industrial Structures is the right software for design of Gravity Dams also."  Using SOLID ELEMENT (BRICK ELEMENT) of STAAD/PRO and creating a large computer model  for a  Gravity Dam  design is not the way to go. Send an  query (E-Mail) to some engineer in MWH  or similar firm in India and find out the right software. Ask him for an example of  computer Gravity Dam  Analysis/Design also.  If I was doing this design I would not start with STAAD//PRO, but I will make sure I am using the most appropriate software for Gravity Dam Design.

Hey bhagat,

There is a free software distributed by PEER, Berkeley called GDAP which you could use to analyse gravity dam.  I believe SAP 2000 will also yield you equally good results for a simple gravity dam ( no complex geometry) . Good luck!
