Hello Rajiv
When we apply a horizontal Concentrated load at beam col. junction
we get axial force in beams because of equilibrium of the system not
because
of relative movement of the ends of the beam.

So if i calculate the lateral forces manually & apply these as joint loads
i will get axial forces in beams.
Using master slave option we are telling the software to calculate &
distribute
the lateral forces (acc to stiffness of the different frames) internally.
So why Staad cannot give value of axial forces in beams using master slave
option; when it is giving shear forces in columns.

Regards

Mukesh

Dear Mukesh:

When you use master slave option you are introducing a constraint in your
model that the two ends of the beam can't move w.r.t. each other. So axial
forces will be zero (because of constraint in your model). That is the
reason STAAD is not printing them.

I must add here that the presence of large axial forces in horizontal
members (beams) must be recognised in a few cases like Arch-Tie sytems,
Virendeel Girders etc. In such cases you will have to use other modelling
options to capture Axial forces in beams.
Hope this helps

Regards

Rajiv Sharma
