IS 3370 requires that expansion joints be provided at every 45m c/c in walls. It is not possible to provide expansion joints in walls of circular tanks as these joints will not allow hoop action to take place. If I try to do away with expansion joints by designing for thermal stresses , then for 35 degree centigrade variation in ambient temperature, thermal stresses at wall bottom where free expansion is not possible , works out to 7.8 N/sq mm (=Temp x Coeff of thermal expansion x modulus of elasticity=35 x (1/100000) x 5000 x SQRT(20)) which exeeds permissible stress in concrete (= 1.2 N/sq mm) for water retaining structures.
Does it mean that as per IS 3370 we can't have any tank with perimeter exceeding 45m?
