As per the IS 1893 clause 7.6.1 for calculation of Time period it is mentioned that
h = Height of building in m.
my doubt is that h is measured from the ground level or from the plinth beam top or from the bottom of footing i.e. PCC top.
and in case of basement when wall connected to floor deck or not connected case from where to measure the (h).
At top level of building (h) is upto tob slab of terrace or top of inverted beam or top of parapet wall or if any column upto some height is left then upto top of that column whichever is higher or anyone. kindly reply.
in IS 1893 clause 7.6.2 for time period calculation it is mentioned that
d is the base dimension of building at plinth level.
my doubt is d is measured at outer to outer of plinth beam or if any cantilever or projection is there at plinth leavel then outer of that projection is taken or if projection at 1st floor or above level then or if building is in zigzag shape (like L shape, T shape, Triangular or etc.) then how to measure d for both x & y direction.

7.6.1 The approximate fundamental natural period
of vibration ( T, ), in seconds, of a moment-resisting
frame building without brick in.fd panels may be
estimated by the empirical expression:
T. = 0,075 h07s for RC frame building
= 0.085 h075 for steel frame building
where
h = Height of building, in m. This excludes
the basement storeys, where basement walls
are connected with the ground floor deck
or fitted between the building columns.
But it includes the basement storeys, when
they are not so connected.

1) h= height of building from above ground ie. above N.G.L or structural slab.(top of slab)
2) At top floor its till top of slab (terrace)
3) base width is distance from outermost supporting column to other outermost. (generally there will be no cantilever projections at ground level).


for L T and other shape buildings please refer fig 3 and 4 of Is 1893.


It is advisable to have a expansion joint at corners.
