Hello Sefians,

I am working with a hydel firm and I am into design of underground structures such as tunnels and Caverns. We have designed the power house cavern and we need to install gantry girder in the cavern to lift the heavy turbines and its accessories. In previous many other projects we have supported the gantry girder by beam and  column supports, but this time I was planning to change this concept in 2 ways 1. to utilize the strength of the surrounding rock to support the girder
2. to design a beam where in one end is embedded in the rock and other end supporting the girder  like in case of cantilever beam, so that we can avoid the extra beam and column arrangment. I would like to know weather we can give a shot to such concept ? and if yes I would also like to know which of the following type can we go for according to stability and safety criteria keeping in mind ? also please give some inputs so as to start with the design process and utilize the property of rock strength. The rock parameters are:

1. youngs modulus, E =10 GPa
2. Poissons ratio = 0.25
3. Angle of friction = 46 degrees
4. Cohesion = 0.46  
5. Rock type = Gneiss
6. Q-Index = 1-10 ( poor to fair rock)
