Dear all

The CED 54 of the  Bureau of Indian Standards is right now undertaking the
job of a major revision of IS:1786 - the specification for High Strength
Deformed Steel Bars and Wires for Concrete Reinforcement.

The draft proposal is available in the following URL.:
http://www.bis.org.in/sf/ced/p_7303.pdf

I take this opportunity to draw the attention of all participants of this
august forum to examine the draft document carefully and comment on the
same. Comments may also be sent directly to Mr. Amandeep Garg, the Member
Secretary of CED 54, BIS, Delhi whose email ID is given below.
aman@bis.org.in

In effect, the draft is trying to introduce a set of new subgrades
captioned with the letter D in Fe 415, Fe 500 and Fe 550 grades, which
indicate extra ductility. If you see the table3 in the page 10 of the
document, you would notice that the elongation level required for the D
grade has been fixed at 14.5% for all the 3 grades, which may be a step in
the right direction. However, in case of Fe 415 grade both the D variety
and the ordinary variety have the same elongation value of 14.5%, which is
probably not right.

With this note I request the views of the structural engineers whether it
helps to specify a minimum limit of elongation at 18% for Fe 415 grade. Any
views?

Other steps which are in the right direction for the D grade are:

1) A higher ratio between tensile strength and yield strength has been
stipulated.
2) An uniform elongation of 5% has been stipulated.

This is the right time to generate all possible opinions on this subject.

Please contribute your views liberally.
