The Ministry of Home Affairs have already initiated Disaster Management in
schools with the Council of Boards of Secondary Education (COBSE) and the
CBSE already has introduced DM in the curricullum in the 8th and 9th
Standards.
Seismic assessment of School buildings needs to be initiated for which the
voluntary role of practising engineers will be crucial.Considering the huge
numbers of buildings involved,we need to support the authorities to get them
assessed and also to develop a retrofitting plan which they surely need.
Answers to the question on how we/who will fund the retrofitting can be
sought in parallel.
A small news item on School seismic assessment in turkey is attached.
Best,
Hari

This is indeed a commendable effort and should be appreciated as a step
in the right direction. In this manual, they can also add the steps to
be taken in case of a flood, Earthquake, hurricane etc which are
frequently occurring natural disasters in certain parts of India. It
should also be made a mandatory thing for the Auditors to find out if
the Building premises conform to safe design as per the relevant Codal
provisions, and for ensuring the same steps should be taken to consult
competent and experienced structural engineers, maybe members of
IAstructE or CEAI etc.
