Dear Colleagues:
The Structural Engineers Forum of India (www.sefindia.org) will conduct an e-conference on two earthquake codes: IS1893 and IS13920. The focus will be the documents developed under the IITK-GSDMA Project on Codes. Under this project, suggestions are made for revisions of these codes (some of the recommended suggestions are quite substantial), a clause-by-clause commentary has been developed, and some solved examples are provided on application of the code. Dates of the e-conference are September 20 - 25, 2004. The e-conference will provide an opportunity to the professionals to discuss and debate these documents and make suggestions for further improvement.
All the documents developed under IITK-GSDMA project are available at the web site www.nicee.org for comments and discussions. Colleagues are encouraged to download these from the web site. HOwever, if you have difficulty in downloading, please write urgently to codes@iitk.ac.in and we will send you these documents through email or on a CD.
We look forward to a vibrant e-conference and some constructive discussions on these two very important codes which are vital for ensuring safety of our built environment.
Best regards,
Sudhir K Jain IIT Kanpur

You may have already seen or downloaded three of Microsoft-Excel spreadsheets, authored by me, for RC column design titled, 'RECTCOLUMN.xls', 'CIRCOLUMN.xls', and 'BIAXCOLUMN.xls' which have been there on SEFI web site since April 2004.
I wish to inform you that as a sequel to the above spreadsheets, a new Excel spreadsheet authored by me titled 'ColEffLength.xls' has been uploaded on to the SEFI web site recently.
I am sure you will obtain EXCEL-lent results from the above spreeadsheets, and enjoy Excel-ling yourself in the structural design work.
With best wishes,
Yours truly,

Hi Prateek,u r indeed welcome in this discussion forum and pl do remember always that this forum is of everyone and by everyone. However, abt masonry foundations, u have IS 4326 as probably the only codal guideline that I am aware of for picking up permissible stress values and the actual stresses to be worked out incl the ecc value etc by the normal conventional method.Any eccentric foundation is unlikely to pass if no tension is permitted in the masonry(in fact the proverbial corner open and eccentric foundations in houses is normally provided by some w/o designing; otherwise I doubt even RCC eccentric corner fdns will pass! Anyways u can come back with the results of ur efforts to the forum. Regards Sangeeta wij SD Engg Consultants
