Dear Sefians

I will be glad if senior Sefians throw some light on following query .

In one of our high rise building project the columns sizes are 450x 1700 and few of them are square in nature with size of 900x900 mm. The requirement of beam  size according  to forces and span is 350 x 600 mm . the question is If in the upper floors the column sizes are reduced, specifically for the square group the reduction in size will lead to joggle in the reinforcement . In such case with the beam width of 350 mm ,majority of the reinforcement will remain out of the beam . Will it be okey ? The Joggle Will be tied through the confining stirrups in beam column junction. Do I need to increase the width of beam up to column width so that all the joggles  can remain inside the beam ?

Or the same beam width of 350 mm is fine? I request all senior Sefians to give their opinion and share their knowledge .

Thanks

Vijay shah

Dear Mr. Vijay Shah,

Any joggle that is provided in reinforcement bars in order to locate them within the beam (plan)/column section, the slope of the bars shall not exceed 1 in 6  (Ref.: Clause 26.5.3.3 of IS 456 : 2000), and it should not be a sharp kink.  Additional stirrups/links are to be provided to resist the outward transverse forces generated due to bend of the bars, and this is a matter of design and detailing that is to be dealt by the design office and shown in the reinforcement detail drawing.

I trust you will find the above information useful.

With best wishes,
