Yesteday's HT showed a picture of a collapsed bridge with a trailor truck ripped in half (Hurricane Ivan--Florida)--the same picture can be seen on a CNN site-- and got thinking why it could have happened.
What comes to mind is if the there were simple restraining cables or concrete snubbers to prevent the bridge from falling off its bearings--it could have been prevented. A lesson to be learnt--while thinking too much about EQ forces we should not forget about rehab of bridges in high wind areas.
