Dear Colleagues:

In the last meeting of CED39 (of the Bureau of Indian Standards) on June
30, 2004, some amendments to IS1893, IS4326 and IS13828 were approved
and the sheets from the minutes of the meeting are now loaded in the
same file at SEFI site. There is a small possibility that there could be
changes at the time of confirmation of minutes! Nevertheless, I thought
it will be useful to share these with the professionals.

Important thing here is: originally IS4326 and IS13828 defined builings
into categories A, B, C, D, and E on the basis of value of alpha(h)
which depended on beta, I, and alpha(o) defined in 1984 version of the
IS1893. After revision of IS1893 in 2002, this term no longer exists.
Hence, the revisions approved in this meeting include new definition of
categoies A, B, C, D, and E based on seismic zone and importance. This
will decide what kind of seismic measures (e.g., lintel band, corner
reinforcement, etc) are needed in a given building.

I suggest that the colleagues may like to see these and compare how
their masonry building categories will change after this revision; they
may find some interesting amunition for discussion!!

With best regards,

Sudhir K Jain
