RESPECTED SENIORS,
I would be highly thankful if someone throw some light on the  how to design  a buttress retaining wall manually as well as using staad pro.

thank you for your reply jaykumar sir,
i have to design a retainig wall for height of 9m-10m and due to sloping land issue counterfort retaining wall was not feasiable and i have tired designing cantilever wall but the section is coming uneconomical can you suggest any other alternative.

Dear Sri. Gurung,
If you can afford the loss of space due to the buttress wall, the same can be considered. For 9m retention, its base width may work out a bit large and may prove costlier. Even if you use STAAD for the analysis / design, you have to carryout the stability check manually.
Some of the modern & cheaper techniques for earth retention include use of  Geotextiles, Gabbions, Soil Nailing etc. You can consult a geotechnical consultant for  for assessing the suitable method for the type of soil at site and the height of retention.
You can refer the book " An introduction to modern techniques in geotechnical and foundation engineering" by Ninan P Kurian, for guidance.
