Dear All,

On a project recently I was asked to sign my structural drawings by the architect. I insited that he first gives me a signed copy of the architectural drawings as “good for construction”. He immediately went on the defensive asking why I would need them. I told him it would stand to reason that the building bye-laws was his responsibility and structural stability was mine. He has no longer insited I give signed drawings (for the time being at least).

One obvious reason would be the building does not comply with bye-laws—but I doubt that this is the cause in this case. Could there be another reason and could the structural community benefit from that knowledge? (insecurity of liability?)

Well, we do sign drawings regularly as a matter of routine and see no reason
why we shouldn't do it irrespective of what the architect does for his part
of the work.

Dear Sangeeta

We sign our drawings as well--but we ought to take another look at the situation. If we are the only professional signing the drawings and an insurance company was covering me for professional liability insurance--they would jack up my insurance or withdraw coverage--I could easily be held responsible for bad job done by others. If other members of the design team also sign their respective parts they will be forced to excercise due dilligence--leading to a better product. This concept will be echoed by ISO 9000 certifcation when consultants get into the fray.
