I  was reading the “Mode of Cracks”  for a simple reinforced concrete beam (simply supported with udl) for a seminar I am to give next week.
Well we have , “flexural cracks” (vertical) , “web shear / diagonal tension
Cracks”, “Flexural shear Cracks”.The explanation/ reasoning for all these is
fine. Then I came across “Splitting Cracks” otherwise called “Secondary Cracks” . Tht text says “sometimes , the inclined crack propogates along the tension reinforcement towards the support . Such cracks are called “Splitting Cracks” or  “Secondary Cracks”. These introduce dowel forces in the tension bars resisting the displacement between two segments of the beam. This is “Dowel Acion”.
My question is that :
WHY THE INCLINED CRACK SHOULD PROPOGATE TOWARDS THE SUPPORT ?? WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS PROPOGATION TOWARDS THE SUPPORT?? Plz help
