Subject- Moment resisting frames & Capacity design procedure
Dear Ali Shah,
This is reply to your two questions
1. Moment resisting frames have joints that can transfer moments that is they are joined in such a way that these joints are restrained against rotation by the interconnecting members.Hence there will be transfer of moments from beams to columns and visa versa. These frames can also resist lateral forces like wind & earthquake. 2. The Capacity design procedure is quite developed in New Zealand & mentioned in their codes & based on work of Paulay.The purpose of capacity design is to limit inelastic action,as well as formation of plastic hingesto selected elements of a moment resistant frame. Ideal location of plastic hinges will be beams . Elements like columns ,are intended to remain essentially elastic under the design earthquake by designing them with sufficient overstrength relative to yielding members.Hence in a way it is strong column & weak beam design philosophy.
