Respected Members,
We are designing a single storey RCC office building in Pune. There is Black cotton soil present till 6m deep. Load on one column is 30T (This is the maximum load).
Since the building is only single storey ,What type of foundation should I choose to design, Should I design under-reamed pile foundation or Isolated foundation with soil stabilization by soling (If acceptable).
What type of foundation is generally adopted in black cotton soil?
I have never encountered black cotton soil in any of my projects so I request all guide me.
Also I would like to know what will be the effect on building by the swelling of BC soil?
If there is swelling, how much negative pressure should I consider for designing of footing?
Note: 1. Load on column is 30T
2. No soil investigation is done by client
Thanks and regards

Dear Er Mohammed,
Hand bored under reamed piles ought to be quite economical for a single storey building, as suggested by Er Naga. |

Dear Er.Mohammed
The suggestion of under-reamed piles is probably the most appropriate for your case.
The formation of the bulb is important. Also, the bulb should be at a sufficiently low level so that there is not much of seasonal variation of soil moisture at the level of the bulb.
By the way, expansive clay can affect the flooring also. Clay has to be treated to minimise damages to flooring. A geotechnical expert may be consulted.

Dear Er.Mohammed,
In addition to the guidance given by Srinivasan sir, you can also consider providing a grade slab covering the floor area, supported on plinth beams, to see that flooring is not getting damaged due to the unruly characteristics of the BC soil.
