Dear Friends,
I am engaged with a infrastructure company where it is practice to apply 75% of the proof load (clamp load) to tighten the anchor bolt nuts for Monopole structures ranging up to height of 30m.
But as per AISC & RCSE, anchor bolt nuts are to be snug tightened only. But exceptions are there for dynamic equipment foundations or high cantilever structures where pre-load can be applied but that also for second lock nut only. Also currently no bolt sleeves/ shafts are provided.
Can anyone help in making the picture clear. Is the procedure being carried out currently right or needs correction. Also I couldn't find any reference in IS codes. IS 4000 refers to structural steel connections. |

Not entirely sure on the exact codal provisions on this, but I suppose the requirement for the nut tightening without pre-loading should be ‘snug tight torque’ with an upper limit of 75% of the proof load stress to ensure no yielding of the nut. The upper limit helps avoid premature yielding of the fastener as the ‘snug tight’ condition definition may vary from practice-to-practice.
