Wouldn't it be better if the IEI had some sort of qualifying exam or some similar requirement to reach chartered status?

I would like to hear others' opinions on this subject.

Dear Er. Abhio,

The IEI is already having AMIE examination, and to pass this examination it is bit tough, tougher than a degree examination.

But, anyone with BE / BTech / MTech degree qualification and few year's experience can easily get MIE qualification by filling up a form and getting attested by few  members/fellows of IEI to become a  Chartered Engineer.  The mistake lies in this easy process by which IEI  looses its credibility,  as compared to the procedure that is followed to qualify as a Chartered Accountant.  I agree with you on this subject.   IEI should change this procedure  by having some examination for degree holders, like the one MIStructE (UK) has, where one's experience is tested and  the percentage of passing is very low.

With best wishes,
