Dear Er Patel,

Water tank walls are subject to direct tension as well as bending. The opening will disturb the flow of force in the tank wall, which will have to be accounted for in your reinforcement detailing.

Also, in case if the opening is provided with some closer (such as a removable entry hatch), then this hatch will have to be designed for the hydrostatic load upon it, and the connection of the hatch to the wall will have to be detailed to transfer the load to the wall.

Dear Er Hiren,

Yes you can do if it is a small opening. But note that the water will escape even if there is a small opening. Hence proper arrangements have to be done. The lid also has to be designed for the hydro-static pressure.

Best wishes
