Dear  Sefi  Engineers ,
In our Sefi  Forum I have seen many questions related to, where a new/good Structural Design Engineer should  start/go  to  do his job right . My answer is use these design Guide examples for both Steel and Concrete Design based on American Codes
AISC 360-16  and  ACI 318-14 .  


Concrete Design : ( ACI 318-14 )
SP-017(14): The Reinforced Concrete Design Handbook Volumes 1 & 2 Package .

Steel Design :     ( AISC 360-16)  
DESIGN EXAMPLES :  Companion to the AISC Steel Construction Manual ,  (ANSI/AISC 360-16) and the 15th Edition .

NOTE :  Both STAAD/PRO  and ETABS  have VERIFICATION  EXAMPLES  proving that you can Design entire building in STAAD/PRO  or ETABS .  To feel comfortable with STAAD/PRO  or  ETABS  DESIGN , PLUG -- IN  one concrete example  and one Steel example from above guides and see if you get same member sizes as the Design Guides.  It will help you to rely on  STAAD/PRO  or  ETABS  for design of ENTIRE  STRUCTURE .  

Note :  Then you have to design CONNECTIONS  ( BEAM TO COLUMN , BEAM TO BEAM , COLUMN TO BASE PLATE, STEEL BRACING , CONCRETE JOINT DETAILING , CONCRETE COLUMN  TO  RAFT  OR PILE--CAP ) . Connection Design in Steel and Concrete Detailing  is more than 50 % of the total Man - Hrs. on the Project.  Some say there are good Connection Design Software's. May be there are ?  More than 50% of Structural Failures in any country  are due to POOR  CONNECTION DESIGN .  I say to all new structural Engineers  GOOD--LUCK  if you are doing  CONNNECTION  DESIGN  IN STEEL  AND CONCRETE  DETAILING . We have to detail these connections designs on GFC Drawings . Steel Connections Design is not left to  STEEL FABRICATOR at least  in  USA .  A License Professional Engineer ( P.E.)  has to design and seal all  GFC Structural Drawings showing steel connections and Concrete Detailing .
